a farther room

Isn’t Christmas a peculiar time of year?  So many of the usual rules of decorum so quickly break down.  For instance, what other month of the calendar finds regular, healthy-minded moms and dads schlepping their young’uns to the mall and planting them on the lap of a strange older man?  And one in a disguise, no less! 

I’ll never forget when, as a kid, I realized that this oddly traumatic annual ritual - sitting on “Santa’s” lap, whispering your deepest wishes into his ear, then posing for some forced, overpriced photo – was a ritual performed not for the enjoyment of kids, but for the pleasure of parents.  That whole this-is-for-the-children pretense was utter and complete horse crap.

In the spirit of exposing childhood trauma, have a gander at some of the hilarious pics over at Sketchy Santas, a photo blog dedicated to questionable Santas and the kids they terrify.  Do some, if not all, of these St. Nicks look like chi-mos?  Yup.  Do some of them look downright demonic?  You betcha!

But at this age, at least you can have a laugh, just like mom and dad always did!  Here’s a further sampling:
